Founding and History

25 July 1892 — Founded in Gesundbrunnen

On 25 July 1892, Berliner Fussball Club Hertha 1892 was founded as one of Germany's first dedicated football clubs.

Hertha's roots lie in the Gesundbrunnen district. Under the Greater Berlin Act of 1920, Gesundbrunnen and Wedding merged into the borough of Wedding.

On 7 August 1923, the club merged with Berliner Sport-Club and was renamed Hertha BSC. The separation from Berliner Sport-Club came in 1930, but the combined name was retained and endures to this day.

Die Plumpe — The Historic Hertha Stadium

In 1923, the club acquired a former ice rink across from Schebera-Platz and began constructing a new stadium.

The Hertha-Stadion in Gesundbrunnen was inaugurated in February 1924 with a league match against VfB Pankow. It became famous under the nickname Die Plumpe — Berlin slang for water pump, after the pumps that lined the surrounding streets. The ground held up to 35,000 spectators and became the home of Hertha's most successful pre-war era under Hanne Sobek.
