Michael Preetz: with 93 goals in 227 league games, the striker was still Hertha’s all-time leading scorer as of December 2019. His goals were a major factor in the club’s rise between 1996 and 2003. Later he moved into management and from 2009 succeeded Dieter Hoeneß as sporting director. His first year as manager ended in relegation, yet president Werner Gegenbauer stuck with him – a sign of the credit he enjoyed in the club.
